Hi /lit/, never read tolstoy and was wondering what english translator

Maude, especially in revised form.

They knew Tolstoy, and Tolstoy said they were the best translators an author could ask for.

I have the Maudes version and I agree its probably the best translated work I've read. Not sure if this is a coincidence, or that they get the tone just right. There's still lots of footnotes if you're interested in the French and Russian terms Tolstoy uses.

P&V are the only option for Russian lit. Anything else is wrong and for pseuds.

Marian Schwartz' Anna Karenina is incredible. Much better than P&V. Those are the two I've actually read. Maudes is good too, but based on what I've seen Schwartz is much better. She is the only one who really captures Tolstoy's style.
