Allen of Button is a pseud.
>>
>>8969974
I'm painfully in love with the lady that does some of the Art/Architecture videos.
>>
compressing complex philosophical insights in "accessible" 5 min videos isn't exactly great I guess
>>
>>8969974

I have a scatological opinion of The School of Life.
>>
great to watch before diving into a work

it's been making people think critically

his opinions on socialism are shit tho
>>
>>8969974
well they're for normies, but they're kind of supposed to be for normies, right? That's the point, make philosophy for normies that they can use in their normie lives. However, when they take Nietzsche and make him for the masses, that's kind of scandalous. Nietzsche was very clear that he was not for the masses
>>
>>8969974

The majority of the School of Life's lectures and videos are either quirky and bland and TED-talk tier useless feel-smart crap, or so reductionistic that they actively distort philosophy, art, and literature into the kind of advice you could get from a smart friend over a beer,
>>
>>8970093
It's approachable. Not everything needs academic detail.
>>
>>8970093
>the kind of advice you could get from a smart friend over a beer

I like the videos but this is true, a lot of it gives you the impression that philosophers were essentially dedicating their lives to the day to improving the day emotional comfort of the normie masses which couldn't be further from the truth.
>>
>>8969974
good for peaking interest, but people should continue to read and discover their opinions on the philosopher or theorist after the video, and not rely on it like doodooheadasses do

Guilty pleasure, Alain's voice is very soothing

I hate it.
Philosophy isn't meant to be a self help guide.

then what is it for if not to help people live better

Understanding the world.
You can use it to organize society, make ethical decisions etc.
It wasn't meant to help you decide whether you should call your ex, and I feel that's what de Bottom is trying to sell.

Horribly bourgeois. Self help for the waitrose frequenting classes.

if philosophy isn't applicable to the average man's life then for the most part it's pointless (also making ethical decisions would help one live better, no?)

It's ok

>making ethical decisions would help one live better, no?

Of course but that's not the point of philosophy.

And why should philosophy be useful to the average man's life to not be pointless ? Number theory and linguistics aren't applicable to the average man's life either, should we stop studying them ?
>>
Shit summaries, overall terrible channel.

Only should be for normies who wish to discover stuff.

Watched a few of their videos and all I got out of it was a mouthful of cultural-marxist, socialistic nonsense - once again proving that the depth of text and topic poorly translates into film, especially through the interpretation and filter of sjw hacks.

These videos are made for art major NEETS and college dropouts who are desperately trying to find sense and order in their lives with no objectively useful skill sets to build a career off, as their rapidly badly, 25 year old Nu-Male asses loathe in their nihilistic reductionist angst, being a cancer on society at large and a leech to their parents' welfare and pockets.
>JEEZ MOM I AM LOOKING FOR A JOB, GOD
>THERE'S JUST NO JOBS AVAILABLE AT THE MOMENT (for people like myself)
>Loads up another "The School of Life" video, wondering at what point in their life things took a turn for the worse.
^ the only society that has room for these kinds of people is big government, where they can have some shitty bureaucrat job, lauding their ideologue over actual hardworking citizens - hence why they have wet dreams for socialism, and never quite understood the benefit of capitalism.

I mean you can tell what their kind of demographic is by hopping over to their website and looking at the books they sell:
> How to be alone
> How to think about exercise
> How to find fulfilling work
> How to age
> How to worry less about money

tl;dr This companies slogan is: "Developing emotional intelligence". If that doesn't tell you just have vacuous and grandiloquent these hacks are, I don't know what will. There is no such thing as emotional intelligence, only intelligence. That's the kind of thing a worthless fuck says to someone in STEM.

Why are people so fucking utilitarian? kys.
>>
i like the visuals, his soothing voice, and the concepts he explains. dont really know how accurate any of it is though, and i dont care.
>>
>>8970699
Agreed.
>>
>>8970780
>Understanding the world.

Does understanding the world for its own sake have any value? My answer would be no, though I don't think everyone would agree.
>>
>>8971121
I don't like School of Life but this post is terrible.
>>
From what I've gathered, the videos seem to promote a philosophy of mediocrity. At least pessimism is achieving something, while this is seemingly a mild acceptance of attaining nothing in life. Only watched a few videos though, so I could be wrong.
>>
>>8970893
>Number theory and linguistics aren't applicable to the average man's life either
which ones?
>>
>>8970864
An hero for the love of Kek.
>>
Their video on Hegel is a disgrace. They straight up say that he was intentionally prolix to convince everybody that he was right. Which is bullshit, because Hegel is mad fuckin important
>>
I find the animations in the small person bios (literature, philosophy etc.) very enjoyable, even if the substance is not on point
I don't care for their other stuff
>>
Summaries of philosophies are often riddled with inaccuracies, bios of literature are enjoyable as they are essentially a wikipedia page with spiced up visuals and relationship and life advice videos are soothing and helpful - it's good to approach these types of videos with a critical mind because they aren't the best nor are they total rubbish, but they contain packets of insights which can help comfort and help us or something (like for example, reminding us that our lovers of course can't know our desires, which is an obvious thing yes, but in the daily grind of life, we often forget that and a youtube video at the start of the day can help us remember it).
