It is obvious he is German. They tend to be hardwired for stuff no other man will do. I have a somewhat removed relative there. Born in Deutschland, can speak my native language perfectly, but refuses to do so. Only drives German cars, changes them every few five years, if the money allows. Spends his cash on vacations, and lives in a few room house. Commendable that he is reading, though. Check this out, it fits your "scifi/epic" criteria. It's the first book in a Chinese hard scifi first contact trilogy. You'll have to convert it to mobi with calibre or something though.
