All the tvs are hooked up with what's essentially netflix and skype-capable. When people chatted on the skype equivalent they would buy little props, eventually turning into tiny boxes they'd put around the camera to make it look like they were somewhere else. It's been a while since I read it but I'm pretty sure that it eventually escalated into masks, mannequins, and just prerecorded videos they'd play in front of the camera and people ended up stressing out so much about preparing perfectly for the video call that they fell out of use.
Trump I'll admit is a stretch as Johnny Gentle is more a Reagan parallel but I think he can be compared to Trump too - a campaign from an entertainer who distrusts "elites," focusing on the wrong issues to the detriment of serious ones, the way each of them talk. Reading through the Broom of the System there's a governor of Ohio who's very similar. He decides Ohioans don't struggle enough so he builds a desert in the middle of Ohio.
