Infinite Jest is just a dude who wasted a lifetime meant for experience on sitting in creative writing seminars drunk on Pynchon.
I just imagine him sitting at a desk seething in the shadow of Gravity's Rainbow like all American writers have struggled with at some time, popping a bunch of pharmaceuticals (he hasn't even lived enough to be a proper addict, his drug dealer is a fucking doctor and his television) and getting all excited, and hopping over to a typewriter even though he lives in the age of computers, hoping that he can cobble his tennis lessons, addiction to TV, creative writing classes, and negligibly interesting months wasted in a rehab center in his late twenties.
This also is the death of Rimbaud, in a way, when "write what you know" becomes the central truth, and we must know plodding autobiography, and poetry is replaced by outdated Merck pharmaceutical manuals.
All great aspects of art die in Infinite Jest.
Nah, it's good. Or maybe it isn't. Who cares? Why do you take it so personally?

I never know what people are trying to accomplish with these poorly researched and hugely speculative posts. Do you want to go "WOah! You're such an amazing psychologist. So impressive, my dude!"
There is not much content here. Just a lot of know-it-all retardation.

IJ is more important than art. There is tons of great art in the world, and tons being made. This is one book, why must it fail because it is not like all that else?
