I want to learn another language, but have no idea which.

There's a bunch of languages in Europe, but as I'm not thinking of moving to any non-English European country, I don't see much point in learning one.

Was thinking Chinese or Japanese. I'd like to visit Japan or Greece.

English is literally savage tier. Shitty vocabulary, its grammar reveals an understanding of the world that is no deeper than that one holded by a retarded person or a baby. It's the kind of language neanderthals would have hypothetically used.
>>
>>8963782
That's a rather solipsistic way of thinking. My mother tongue is English too, but I'm not so stupid as to think that my language is the measure of all. But I guess that's more of an American way of looking at things than anything else.

I've been learning Russian for about 7-8 months now. I'm finally at the point where I can ready Harry Potter in translation while leaning on a dictionary. So from here on out I'm taking words from it and throwing them in an anki deck as I go. My main goal with Russian is reading so I don't care much about my production skills. I'm also terrible at listening but watching trash tv shows is helping with that.

A strategy I would recommend is start with Duolingo to drill in the super basic stuff, then abandon it for a grammar book and anki decks. Once you have a good grasp of the grammar go back to duolingo solely as a vocab builder for best results. Although beginning to read with dual readers and stufc would probably give better results at thus point. On top of all this consume whatever you can in the language. For Russian I browse threads on /int/ and двa.ч, as well as reading the news in Russian.
>>
>>8964093
So far French has been incredibly easy to learn. There's also a lot of high quality French media to read, watch and listen to which makes it a lot more enjoyable. I'm going to finish Duolingo then maybe buy some grammar books and read basic fiction.
>>
>>8964101
it's easy to learn because a lot of the conjugation are not necessary

now if i ask you distinguish between the uses of
1st form past or 2nd form past and more-than-perfect or even anterior future while giving examples i don't think you'd be able to do it properly yet, in fact a large percent of the population DON'T even know how to use them because unless you want to write stuff that sound like it was written 500 years ago you simply don't need them.

subjunctive and conditional aren't necessary unless you want to write theater pieces

You sound motivated, I've been "learning" Russian for a little more than a year know, I want to make it my fourth language. Unfortunately I don't find enough time to study it, so I just take a couple of lessons a week with Duolingo and watch some Russian videos. I also listen to Russian popular songs and learn their lyrics, such as Кaтюшa. I'm definitely not fluent yet and am barely able to grasp a couple of word in a speech.
Any advice regarding motivation?
>>

>>
I am learning English at the moment. Pronunciation is difficult ;_;
>>
>>8965085
Just get the basics down, then mimic what you hear from the dictionary read alouds. English pronunciation is too complicated to waste time on rules. Grasp it as you go, or listen to pronunciations.

learn latin, then russian. if you still have the desire in a few years, learn greek (which will be much easier after russian and latin).

i learned latin in high school using the cambridge latin coursebooks—since they don't lean on rote memorization like wheelock's, et al.

i learned russian using the "golosa" textbooks. i'm not sure if i recommend it without a teacher or classmates, however.
>>
>>8963708
Because French is a useless language and the only one that's interesting to me.
>>
>>8965065

Motivation comes and goes for me to be honest.
There are days where I do little to no formal study (anki, duolingo, reading a book), but as you say I'll always find time to try to read some news in Russian or watch a video or something. I'm progressing slower than I could be.

I can't motivate myself to get better at listening at all. Listening is very demoralising to learn because so little sinks in at first. My main goal is to read in Russian so I content myself with focusing on that.
>>
>>8963708
I-I-I am though.

Europe is becoming less and less relevant. Russia and China, on the other hand, are growing in relevance year after year.

It would actually make more sense to study Portuguese and Spanish and focus on South/Central American growth opportunities than a European one (possibly even African growth potential - which is what the Chinese gov't is doing, btw).

Not to mention, Japan, China, South Korea, and Russia are really the only competition American technological innovation has.

Sorry Euros, it's true. (England and Switzerland are exceptions, or at least partial exceptions, but that's also why they aren't a part of the Euro.)

Only some Americans - the dumb ones. You'll notice many of the most highly educated, and wealthiest, Americans are currently learning Mandarin Chinese. Others are learning Russian, Arabic, and Portuguese/Spanish. From an American point of view, these are generally the most relevant languages - for reasons which vary.
>>
>>8964259
It was used for centuries by the well educated. Therefore, you will be forced to rely on translators to do large amounts of historical scholarship for you without it. Also, it makes your English/romance language vocabulary skyrocket.

I'm an English speaker, but I can understand a significant amount of romantic vocabulary simply due to my studies in Latin.

As Ivan, it's so strange to me. I don't even remember the last time I've read anything in russian that wasn't poetry. Maybe I'm just retarded but in prose the language hardly even matters to me, unless we're talknig about really bad translations, I feel the same while dabbling in english, russian, or german, not to mention that 20th century russian novels are crap anyway.

Athenaze is the closes thing to the "standard" text (at least for Attic Greek, which is probably what you mean when you say "ancient"), but you must stay away from the unrevised version of the latest edition because it has many atrocious errors, and from what I understand even the revised version is still pretty lackluster. Sorry, bruv. I think I used the second edition, so maybe you can look for that. On the bright side, your knowing Russian should make learning the language much easier, because you're already familiar with inflection.
>>
>>8964179
Most people don't learn languages to travel to a place tho, unless you're going to work or study there, or you're going to a poorer nation where most people probably don't understand english.

It's about the culture, the news, the politics, the media, etc. And if you're going to socialize further than one-night stands it's also a good idea to not expect everyone in a social gathering to speak english for you.

I understand from you post that you speak only 1 language. Are you aware that translations change completely the work specially if the prose is more artistic? Things that may sound beautiful in one language becomes banal in the translation because it was crafted for the original language, then there is the problem with slangs, sayings etc..
>>
>>8968474
Joseph Conrad didn't learn English till he was in his 20's and his skills at it are renowned. Tolstoy similarly was learning new languages when he was in his 60's.

Learning another language will also help you get de-memed.

while i don't know if this could be considered true, i've always thought something similar.
For example, if instead of learning a foreing language you just focus on perfectioning your mother tongue by the rest of your life, wouldn't you be able to have one of the most destacated writing styles in your language?

Still, i find learning a widely-spoken language such as english has a great amount of benefits, such as a larger access to information and the capability of being able to speak with a giant internet community.

Yeah, but French is also the language of France. You should really know these things before coming on a literature board too.

Learn whatever you want, anon. Once you start learning multiple languages, you realize that it's not a binary. I know French and Latin super well, so I can read Spanish fine and order in a restaurant in Italy and catch a few lines of dialogue in a Romanian movie. If you wanted to master another Romance language, it wouldn't be difficult at all. They're all 90% the same. But if you're more interested in etymology or history or literature, you might want to try an ancient language. Or if you're an animoo weeb you might want to learn Japanese. Or if you're fascinated by the idea that concepts change as they're conveyed by different languages, you can learn ASL. Really, 4chan can't tell you anything about what language you "should" learn next. It'll just get easier and easier the more of them you learn. I know five languages well, not counting the incidental knowledge I mentioned above.

>inb4 nonbinary meme
>>
>>8969097
This. I am a native English speaker, but I often find it difficult to express concepts in English, while I can do so in French. For instance, "pourrir" comes to my mind to describe something before "rot," "decay," or "ruin" come to mind because I don't think any of those words properly translate the concept.

Provided you're referring to so-called “practical” knowledge, you should be aware that languages are certainly the most valuable assets on the markets, more than is the degree once you have some experience. There's nothing optimal in lacking such an expensive and recognized asset.

Note that it isn't necessary incorrect, yet “wrong”, as it doesn't sound natural/coherent. “High-school” is rarely used and when it is, it's usually an adjective. Also, English typography doesn't require a space before strong punctuation. As far as I know, the only Indo-European language that does it is French, hence my assumption.

space before the question mark is a french thing.
you might also be misusing comma and period in numbers.
In english 2.5 means two and a half, in french 2,5 is used instead.
obviously vice versa for the marks put every 3 number to make it easy to read. 1,000 and 1.000 mean thousand in english and french respectively.

Grammar rules are important sure, though duolinguo also contains grammar lessons.

Reading anything more than a children's book when starting out is going to be 90% a waste of your time, you'd be spending far longer turning pages in a dictionary than you would reading.

But who am I kidding, this is /lit/, lots of people here get off on doing needless difficult shit to get a sense of superiority.

Nnosense. If you cram the grammar rules and 800-1000 most common words, you can begin reading foreign literature with some confidence. Also, bilingual editions exist, another good idea is to read your own favourite novels, for which you already know the story and general context

I started to learn English reading a visual novel (Tsukihime). While it is doable, there are better ways to learn.

Reading books is a must, but I don't think it is the best way to go if you're starting. It would be like learning violin playing music - you don't, you practice scales and etudes, exercises that pin-point a very specific matter, and once you know each technique required, it's time to put it all together; I would apply the same to language learning.

Once a person has a basic grasp of vocabulary, he may start reading books, but I think literature would still be a wrong step, because literature is highly complex, the grammar is not always followed and it is very much oriented to be stylistically attractive. In this case, reading non-fiction books is advisable because the language is often plain and simple.

My humble advice:
- Avoid Duolingo, Rosetta Stone and similar, they will not be particularly useful. They aren't useless, but there are better ways to spend your time.
- Go to piratebay. Torrent "Michelle Thomas Complete V3".
Michelle Thomas is a superb teacher. He will do for you in one hour more than Duolingo in ten hours.
- Download Anki and Anki Decks. It works like a charm to increase vocabulary.
- Get non-fiction books to practice reading, nothing technical - if you're learning French and practice with postmodern philosophy you will be dead on waters in no time. Maybe a History book, scientific divulgation may work too.
- FUCKING STICK WITH IT.
Do it everyday. Progress will not occur with hard work and a high level of commitment.
- Bonus: Pay for some lessons on italki if you can afford it. Don't look for teachers with a degree, look native speakers, the latter are much cheaper. It is obvious that they are not trained to teach you a language, but after you can read some books at a somewhat comfortable level, you may want to practice your speaking skills.

Good luck.
You will be great.

A tutor is always the best, but not everyone can afford a tutor, and many who can can't find someone who fits their schedule
