In terms of history books I'd recommend Citizens: A Chronicle of the French Revolution by Simon Schama as a good historical overview. Also, Thomas Carlyle's The French Revolution: A History is very good, but unusual in that it reads more like a narrative than a conventional history book.
If you're looking for a classic story about the revolution, try Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities.
