Because without giving life meaning you cannot live. Life is desires and drives and these come from meaning and belief, even in it's in it's simplest form like, "Satisfying hunger is nice". Just live may sound nice, but doing so is impossible. Living without meaning, in some sense of the word, is like trying to swim on dry land.

Life feels pointless when you are sad. You are sad when you don't do rewarding and pleasurable activities.

I'm not advocating cheap hedonism, because working hard and delaying pleasure is what ultimately brings you the most pleasure.

That there is no meaning to life is what makes it beautiful. We have the freedom to choose what is rewarding for us to do assuming we are conscious enough. One set meaning would make life terrifyingly fascistic, since everyone who deviated from that one meaning would lead meaningless lives, but thankfully it is not like that. All is equally meaningless/ful.

Although the meaning of our lives is really to send emanations to God to maintain his existence, and also to be food for the moon, as Gurdjieff said.
