The West obviously does not have the 20th century style gender roles any longer, the kind where a woman's place was as a homemaker, or as a nurse or a teacher, and a man's place was in a coal mine or in positions of power.

Now, many more women are nurses and homemakers than men still, but I think this is a matter of pragmatism on the part of the individual itself, not a matter of social pressure.
