my dad gifted this crap to me for christmas. he knows that I barely passed formal logic 101. I think he's trolling me.

Never had a chance to finish it. Got about a third of the way through before a friend of mine shot it with a BHP.

Bullet didn't make it all the way through but wrecked the pages enough to make it unreadable.

It's a fascinating read but I kind of lost it in Part 3. Hofstadter claims to write for the layman but he really doesn't. Either that or I'm just a top fucking pleb. Probably the latter.

It's written for laymen. Passing even a brief intro course to formal logic should be more than enough to cover the actual logic in the book. But anyway, he's thorough enough on the relevant parts that anyone should be able to grasp it with a little perseverance.


I found the book far too rambling and distracted to produce any salient argument about the nature of the mind anyway. It's fun at times, because Hofstadter is far too clever and the way he weaves the three themes can be interesting, but the constant digressions get annoying and his student David Chalmers is far more engaging in terms of exposition of philosophical problems and conceptions of the mind and consciousness.
