In the English pronunciation of Greek and Latin names, in a polysyllabic word, the stress is placed upon the penultimate syllable when it is long (in quantity or quality). The penult is Ulysses is long by quality, as it ends with a consonant (U-lys-ses). So the word is accented u-LYS-ses. The "y" in this context is pronounced as a short "i." The ending "es" is pronounced as "ease." The initial "u," since is pronounced as the English long u. Thus the final pronunciation is "you-LIS-ease" or IPA ju'lJsiz.
