Certainly idealized imitation can go a long way. An author can describe idealized battles and soldiers without having ever seen one, why not idealized cute girls?

Basing on anime is far from competent idealization though. If you end up using anime-tropes your best case scenario is that this will end up some popular fanfic for otakus. An author who describes an idealized battle might base his work on Homer or great historians, because these are present in our collective cultural consciousness. Anime isn't.
