Exactly why is hubris a bad thing?

On a narrative level, mostly because Gods are envious.
On a "message" level, because humans are not gods and moderation is always the right path to follow. The "know yourself" delphian thing is about knowing your own capacity.
On a metaethic level, because every human quality which, given a name, is viewed as positive implies it's excessive/deficient opposites and maybe because hubris kept some relationship to individual transgression of the law (crime or "sin").
