that's the central idea, yeah. Casting him as an "idiot" is a satire of society. It's basically like those facebook memes that say "Christ was a arab socialist lel, Americans would hate him today" except well-written.

But you did read that in the wiki or something, didn't you? I read the book two times (granted, the last one was 6 years ago) and unless I'm mistaken that's not a conclusion someone that just started reading the book can arrive at by himself.

I read the introduction of the book that gives way to understanding Myshkin. I did not read the Wiki.
Either way, it does sound interesting and I will continue to read the book.

Enjoy it anon. I was thinking of reading it again since Myshkin is an amazing character and it has some of the best scenes Dosto has ever written. I'm also extremely lonely by the way.

Is Garnett or McDuff better and why?

Garnett uses a language that some people can find complicated and has some errors and tends to omit some things but nothing serious. It is a good translation. McDuff is both accurate and readable. One of the best translations in the English language.
I've read both Garnett and McDuff and liked them both. Avsey is another option although I didn't read his The Idiot (I did read his TBK and loved it).

I've read half of it so far, usually I don't like introductions but in my version of a Hungarian translations they had a pretty good summary of Myskin's character, Russia's mysticism vs the European nihilism and things like that which make me appreciate a lot more what I'm reading.
