In order to write a love story, must a writer have experienced love?
>>
>>8869485
You're not going to make it.

But no
>>
>>8869485
Absolutely not.
>>
Shakespeare didn't know shit about being a Danish prince with a ghost dad but he did an alright job with the material
>>
Experiencing love means hearing about other peoples love stories too.
>>
I've been in love, but never with a person before. At different times in my life I've fallen in love with a blue jay, an iguana, an apple tree, a lake, a PC graphics card, and a ball of teal poster putty. But no people yet.
>>
Could a film critic effectively review Citizen Kane if he had never seen it?
>>
You could probably fake it if youre writing a novel based on things you've seen and read about love, but you would never have the acuity and depth of insight as someone who has felt what it's like to be in love and to be loved in return. It's only happened to me once in my life but it is unmistakably different from anything else
>>
>>8869547
I have never seen Citizen Kane and I am confident that I could whip up a competent review of it.

Just through osmosis I know enough about the film and it's reception to fill a couple paragraphs
>>
Yes or it's going to suck. Your lack of knowledge is going to be very apparent to anyone who actually has been in love.

>>8869505
Difference here is that nobody knows what that's like, whereas the vast majority of the adult population does know what it's like to be in love. If you try to write about it with no personal experience, it's going to be painfully obvious.

This kind of shit >>8869532 is precisely what I'm talking about.
>>
This thread is just sad Desu
>>
>>8869547
Citizen Kane? I can't help but reply, it's one of my favorites. It really goes to the heart of what it means to be an American, I think. I mean, look at the title. He is a "citizen" above all. A citizen of the United States. Is he an ideal citizen? No. He's not the best citizen ever. He's got his flaws, his failings, but don't we all? That's what makes us human, and what makes Mr. Kane such a human character. The way that Welles shows us how informed our identities by the nation that we are a citizen of, is staggering. He understood more than anyone that the nation is the primary influence in our life, that in the end, we're all citizens, and that there's a little "Kane" in all of us. 5/5
>>
>>8869584
so is my diary
>>
>>8869586
So the answer is no
>>
>>8869485
No, you can write about whatever the fuck you want.
>>
>>8869561
Go ahead.
>>
>>8869485
What if you have been in love but never in a relationship? I've felt very deep love for other people, but I've never been with anyone. I would not feel confident in writing a romantic relationship.
>>
>>8869576

I can't even ree anymore

>>8869485

Who
>>
>>8869485
Don't listen to the "experience" meme.
Obviously if you knwo what you are talking about that would make it more realistic but your point of view of loive without having experienced it first is also worth reading, it just would be too romantic or surreal I guess.

I know for a fact that I wrote very stupid, far from reality love stuff before my first girlfriend. If you write it in a way where is a character that has no experience in love that is telling it then you could get away with it.
>>
No, just to have tried to love.
>>
>>8869485
Yes.
>>
>>8869576
what makes you the authority on this subject?
I doubt most authors have lived the experience of their characters even peripherally
>>
>>8869485
source for pic please?
>>
>>8869485
In this particular case I'd say yes.
Because love isn't great and this can only be understood if one has loved and lost :^v)

which sorta counts as experience desu, second-hand experience
>>
>>8869485
As retarded as this may sound: read as many poems written on love by Charles Bukowski as you can. They give you a more realistic portrait of mostly flawed romantic relationships, if you don't have any experience.
>>
So what does love feel like? Salty coins? Bags of sand?
>>
>>8869485
Dude, it wouldn't just seem believable. But if you want to write about non-reciprocated love than you would probably have more success.
>>
It will be useful

>Implying you mustn't have read a love story in order to experience love.
Don't be a meme, dream.
>>
Romantic love could be divided into two feelings. One of those feelings is one you experience in sexual activity/attraction, and the other feeling is vastly dynamic, developed out of loving someone over a long period of time. The latter is not actually a defined emotional state, I guess. It's a developing memory that holds a very distinct emotional power over you. The feeling it conjures is amazing because it comes out every time you see or think of your lover, a person that has probably been stained into your image of the world in a way. What I'm talking about is always different between any two perspectives. Considering that, the power of the love story lies within the attempt to express your personal experience of love. So, if you're writing a narrative that exists solely within the relationship of two lovers, the answer is yes. Of course, love is felt in a lot of other contexts, so you could still write a story about love in some other sense. That's a daunting artistic endeavor though. Hesse did it in Siddhartha, but even that story had to include a romantic relationship to truly bring out the story's themes. Love is really best experienced by lovers.

Having seen Citizen Kane doesn't make you a film critic either.

I read some of my friend's fantasy book and all of the women characters were astoundingly horribly written, killing any sort of immersion. He does have aspergers, but I'm assuming that because you are asking this question on 4chan.org you aren't too far off, no offense.

I would say that while you don't necessarily have to have experienced deep love, it seems like it would be incredibly important to at least have a grasp of how women think/act. Assuming you want to write about a man/woman sort of love and not a bird/lightbulb type of love or whatever.

First of all, there really is no such thing as love.

Second of all, if there is, romance as depicted in fiction and films is nothing but a cobbling together of clichés and things that people wish love was. It is anything but an accurate depiction of love (if such a thing exists).

>TL;DR to write a romance, all you need to know is what people want to believe love is, not what it really is.

To add to this fellow's critique of pure kane, the film is really a representation of what it means to follow the American Dream. To grow as a citizen and bud like a rose until you are old enough to require a cane, that is what films are about. And the fact fact that it's all in black and white is a stunning reminder of the dreams of the past.
>>
It would certainly not be a requirement to have experienced reciprocated love; depending on the story this could actually be an advantage. I can't think why someone who had never experienced love at all would want to write about love.
>>

>>
>>8869485

once you experience something, no matter what it is, you gain new insights, perspectives, and wisdom pertaining to that experience that someone looking in from outside will never be able to gain without experiencing it for himself. So maybe some people can write great love stories without having loved, but those stories would most likely lack the small details of love (that one only notices when in love) throughout the story; how everything looks a bit different, the butterflies in the stomach, and so on.

For example, you can study boxing for years and years, but until you step in the ring you will never know the exhilaration, adrenaline, fear, and pain, that a fighter feels. Since a story, in my opinion, should make the reader feel as if he/she is really there, that lack of detail and perspective would make it really hard for a guy who's never fought to write a book about what it's like to fight.

Consequently, a guy who's never loved, would have a hard time writing a story about what it's like to love; he's never done it himself.

Just my opinion.

Something equal is lost in the negation of absence. Desire of love after having lost is a different desire to the one formed of pure fantasy without experience. You can't win.
>>
>>8869485
No, but it makes it a whole lot easier. If you haven't been in love, you should at least understand human behavior in the context of a relationship and not try and fake the sentimental stuff that hasn't been experienced firsthand. It's possible to be convincing despite it, but it's very easy to screw it up as well.

Loved her in Flashback of a Fool and when she played Miranda from that Tempest film, and really enjoyed Rouge One.
Terribly single now, which only stokes an unreasonable fire in my chest.

One can write much of love, since is emanates from your self. Thought, relationships must be experienced in order to write them convincingly.
