Experiencing love means hearing about other peoples love stories too.

I've been in love, but never with a person before. At different times in my life I've fallen in love with a blue jay, an iguana, an apple tree, a lake, a PC graphics card, and a ball of teal poster putty. But no people yet.

Could a film critic effectively review Citizen Kane if he had never seen it?

You could probably fake it if youre writing a novel based on things you've seen and read about love, but you would never have the acuity and depth of insight as someone who has felt what it's like to be in love and to be loved in return. Romantic love could be divided into two feelings. One of those feelings is one you experience in sexual activity/attraction, and the other feeling is vastly dynamic, developed out of loving someone over a long period of time. The latter is not actually a defined emotional state, I guess. It's a developing memory that holds a very distinct emotional power over you. The feeling it conjures is amazing because it comes out every time you see or think of your lover, a person that has probably been stained into your image of the world in a way. What I'm talking about is always different between any two perspectives. Considering that, the power of the love story lies within the attempt to express your personal experience of love. So, if you're writing a narrative that exists solely within the relationship of two lovers, the answer is yes. Of course, love is felt in a lot of other contexts, so you could still write a story about love in some other sense. That's a daunting artistic endeavor though. Hesse did it in Siddhartha, but even that story had to include a romantic relationship to truly bring out the story's themes. Love is really best experienced by lovers.

I would say that while you don't necessarily have to have experienced deep love, it seems like it would be incredibly important to at least have a grasp of how women think/act. Assuming you want to write about a man/woman sort of love and not a bird/lightbulb type of love or whatever.

To add to this fellow's critique of pure kane, the film is really a representation of what it means to follow the American Dream. once you experience something, no matter what it is, you gain new insights, perspectives, and wisdom pertaining to that experience that someone looking in from outside will never be able to gain without experiencing it for himself. So maybe some people can write great love stories without having loved, but those stories would most likely lack the small details of love (that one only notices when in love) throughout the story; how everything looks a bit different, the butterflies in the stomach, and so on.

For example, you can study boxing for years and years, but until you step in the ring you will never know the exhilaration, adrenaline, fear, and pain, that a fighter feels. Since a story, in my opinion, should make the reader feel as if he/she is really there, that lack of detail and perspective would make it really hard for a guy who's never fought to write a book about what it's like to fight.

Consequently, a guy who's never loved, would have a hard time writing a story about what it's like to love; he's never done it himself.

Just my opinion.

If you haven't been in love, you should at least understand human behavior in the context of a relationship and not try and fake the sentimental stuff that hasn't been experienced firsthand. It's possible to be convincing despite it, but it's very easy to screw it up as well.
