Wasn't it primarily about the West needing religion to thrive? Catholicism was supplanted by liberalism/enlightenment which led us to a dead end culturally so the Islamists stepped in to fill that spiritual gap. I'm not pro-Islam btw. I think the issue is that the West has no atheistic philosophy commonly used other than socialism/communism (failure) or neo-liberal capitalism (soon to be failure). I don't see why a religion is needed to fill this gap when there are other atheistic philosophies, such as Fascism. Islam is not "taking over" Europe because we lost spirituality, it is because the neo-liberal capitalists are shipping them over in massive numbers in the mistaken belief it will save the almost dead economy.
