As a huge fan of James Joyce I can happily say not in the slightest.
If plot is essential to you at all you might as well kill yourself immediately because you irredeemably failed as a human being

yes and no.
but mainly both.
nothing is essential
I only focus on prose and sometimes meaning if it's a unique subtext

>he reads for anything other than plot

Why wouldn't you just read YA and Dickens then

Which one?
Disregarding plot is a privilege that one must earn

All his works have well discernable plots.

Because a good story requires good characters and good writing, as to convey it in a way that is meaningful - while YA fiction has terrible prose, flat characters and essentially storys that are created to pander to some demographic. I assume. I've never read YA.
Kinda. If there is no plot or if the plot is bad, style has to be extremely good to make up fo it. Needless to say most authors are not up to the task. On the other hand, a few of the people who are well aware that their skills as storytellers are mediocre (Joyce) are able to transcend this weakness by creating incredibly beautiful language.

>joyce skills as storyteller are mediocre
complete bullshit.
