I got it from the small New section of a used book store; the guy's prices are too high so I had to put one over on him. He doesn't deserve to profit from other people's words

>He doesn't deserve to profit from other people's words

Why didn't you just pirate the ebook? You stole paper and binding as well as words. You're also robbing Nabokov's estate, his heirs.

You could do better. The best Odyssey in Spanish, by far, is the one by Luis Calvo (Catedra). Iliad has more options being Crespo (Gredos), Eire (Catedra) and Segala y Estalella (Espasa-Calpe and I think Losada too) the options form best to worst.
Anyway, your translation is by García Gual so you're not doing bad being he the director of Gredos' Cassical Library, but just something to keep in mind. The options above are not my amateur opinion but the standards recommended by knowledgeable professors, taking into account notes and not only translation (the reason why Gredos Odyssey is no good).

I've been reading Greeks for a long time, asked professors and did my research online anon. Also I have a thing for reading universities bibliographies for different subjects. I find that a great way of picking a few candidates before reading more in depth analyses and then read the booms yourself and form your opinion.

Well then, what do you think about Tapia's recent translation published by UNAM in the bilingual collection?
>>
>>8855344
national socialism?
>>
>>8855992
Haven't read it and I'm not a Greek student so I don't really know about bilingual editions. Maybe you can tell me what was the standard and how this new translation challenges that or is doomed to be just one more, although is too soon to say of course.
>>
>>8856077
I have only read some excerpts, and the translations in that collection are usually very literal (though the verse is maintained in the case of poetry, and prose in the case of prose).

But just to take one example, he translates πολυτρόπως (polytropos) as "muy versátil" instead of "de muchos senderos" as Calvo does. Tapia wrote an essay on what translating Homer means to him and what are some of the challenges that such a text poses to the translator. You can find it here. https://revistas-filologicas.unam.mx/acta-poetica/index.php/ap/article/view/112/111

Check it if you have the time, it's not bad at all.

Thank you anon, I certainly will. Calvo's excellent edition actually mentions the translation of that word (pic related) and this is an excellent example of why a good annotated edition is a must when it comes to hard works to translate as Homer.

Thank you. So, is the better Iliad in Spanish the one edited by Cátedra? I thought this one would be a good translation because of García Gual, should have researched more.

Here's the first page of Tapia's translation, just for reference. I don't like the way Calvo translates "mala polla planxthe" to "errante muy mucho". I prefer García Cual's or Tapia's version: "por muy largo tiempo anduvo errante" and "el que mucho vagó".

The best Greeks are the Gredos.
Source: My uni teacher who's a greekaboo.
>>
>>8856320
For the Iliad you can go for Gredos, Catedra or Espasa. In general, follow what >>8856366 said. For Greeks and Latins, Gredos is the best option almost always, being Odyssey an unusual case.
>>
>>8856365
I agree that sentence reads better, but that's an edition for someone studying Greek and already familiar with the problematics of Greek translation. Certainly not suitable for a first time reader, although I don't think anyone thinks reading one of these works without proper notes is a good idea.

You look like the kind of person who's going to come out of Heart of Darkness with a pro-colonial sentiment.

Thinking of getting some of the Greek texts from either Penguin or Oxford. Problem is they cost almost the same and so I don't know which to get.

I understand the key difference between them is Oxfords additional commentary but I'm not going to be studying the texts.

So what publisher shall it be?

You should make a decision based on what works you want to read. Some may be better in Oxford and others in Penguin.
