What does /lit/ think of this guy? Is he a weirdo?

He's a hack. If he were alive right now he'd be a cancerous /pol9k/ frogfaggot

I hear his poetry's good. His novels are second-rate by modernist standards, closer to Hardy except without the gothic-romantic genius. The few short stories of his that I've read were better, similar to Maugham but still lacking.
Can anyone give me a good sample of his verse?

That's false. He's a good writer, in a very quiet way. If you like Graham Greene, I think you'll like D.H. Lawrence.

The only thing I've read are his poems and they're mediocre
Also, he reminds me of Warren Beatty in McCabe and Mrs Miller. Every time I see one of his photos, that's all I see.

That's funny, because I actually consider Hardy to be a slightly better poet than novelist. Here's the catch: I've never really understood poetry except for a few sublime moments of clarity, so verse has always retained an element of mystery to me. I can compare Hardy to other novelists of his era and judge him to be lesser, but his poetry eludes me simply because I don't really "get" what they're meant to do. I've read a lot of Nabokov's poetry, but I can tell right away it's all secondary to his prose.

Read Figs and Snake. If you liked them, read the rest of that collection.

Damn. Figs was bizarre. Pornographic even. I'm intrigued.
