Is the book better than the film?

Probably not, films are generally much better than books

Is the film even good? It's been sitting in my Netflix list for a while

It's noteworthy because of Gregory Peck's performance, but otherwise it's nothing special. It hasn't aged very well, which is saying something as I'm a person that loves old movies.
The ham scene in the movie is spooky as frick.

Why do people watch the movies before reading the book?
I remember watching movies like this in school then always telling the teacher the next class that we were 30 minutes or more before we actually were, so we wasted more classes watching them. We managed to watch black hawk down about 5 times over the course of 3 weeks this way.
