Considering whether to dip for a $30 old model, ~$100 for PW/Glo HD, or all in for this Kobo Aura One for a first ereader.
Thoughts?

I don't care.

Glo HD/Paperwhite
There is no reason to get premium ereaders, im convinced they exist only to cater to that tiny sub-section of high income earners that want to have the most expensive toy.

If you have money, buy Aura One, it have bigger screen, and that mean a lot.
Best route is probably used Glo HD. The Aura One is spiffy, but other than the bigger screen, there's no reason they can't put those features in a smaller cheaper body.

I own the Glo model, and I am quite happy with it. I've used a 2010 model Nook in the past, and I honestly haven't found much difference between them. Buy whatever is cheap.

Kobo sucks, buy a kindle paperwhite.

Kindle sucks, buy a Kobo.

I tried ebooks, It's just not the same without the smell, especially since I read a lot of old scifi novels that were printed on cheap paper in the 70's and 80's. If they could get an ebook reader to smell like old browned or yellowed paper books I'd be all for it.

Tape a moldy sock to the back.

There are some kindle covers that smell just like paper

Just keep one of those old paperbacks at hand and sniff it every now and them.

Kobos are limited. Go for a Kindle Paperwhite, you can read all formats on there. I'm getting that for christmas.

Some brown covers actually smell like dog feces. It is quite amazing. Ah the wonders of our modern world.
