I always recommend his autobiographical trilogy. Admittedly, I've never finished part three (My universitites), but I felt it had a distinct shift right from the start that I'm not sure I can explain this long after reading it.
Part one (My childhood) deals a lot with poverty, misery, destructive family relations, and the grand Russian soul. Its prose is beautiful, at least in the Swedish translation, with just enough elements of fairytale to escape the trap of stale realism, while simultaneously having both feet on the ground, clearly describing ordinary people as they are.
Part two (In the world) deals more with poverty and the suffering of the Russian farmers and workers. The prose has the same blend of fairytale and realism, and especially the descriptions of nature (picking mushrooms and berries with the grandparents, or spending a summer as a bird-catcher) are beautiful.
Gorkij/Gorky is a master of describing both people and milieu, and should be read by everyone.
Can someone please talk about some of the main themes that Gorky tackles in his works?
