They don't require each other, do they? Most of the philosophers who rejected free will -- Einstein, Spinoza, Nietzsche, Emerson, and modern thinkers like Sam Harris -- still hold the importance and reality of freedom of thought and self expression. Does determinism destroy the idea of individuality and nonconformity?

Every decision you make will be the one that grants you the most utility

What determines what grants you the most utility? This is the causal chain that determinists reference.

However, what happens when you reach a scenario where action and affirmative, conscious inaction both grant you exactly equal utility? How do you act? You're stuck here in indecision forever until a new force acts upon you.
