Schelling coined the term unconscious in 1800, and the concept was thoroughly a part of German Idealism for a long time. My favorite exploration of it is that of Eduard von Hartmann who, according to Nietzsche, was one of the Lions of Berlin. His Philosophy of the Unconscious (1869) saw ten editions printed, and Freud was known to be familiar with the work. The idea may have been used to subvert western civilization somewhat, but there's no reason it can't be reclaimed, and perhaps it ought to be.
