So which sentence
>they were probably put there by old people who HATE fun
>they were probably put there by old people who HATED fun
the sentence is past tense. Does this mean the description of the old people hating fun has to be past tense?
Do the old people still hate fun?

probably

No they're dead
Either is justifiable gramatically, but you'll want to go with hated. It doesn't necessarily imply the no longer hate fun (just because it was true then doesn't mean it's not true now) and it keeps things simple. If you go with hate you'll have to use the present for every similar instance and you can end up with some awkward constructions.
