The most important thing in reading fiction is joy and pleasure. If you're not enjoying it, stop. Since you're leaving your 20's, isn't this just a crisis of identity, in a way? I mean, late 20's is typically the first stage in a person's life where you don't feel like you're systematically shoved into a social context and that you have to find ways to cut through all the noise.

For example, when you were in middle or high school and you were the first kid to listen to this band or read this author, that validated you in a way. It was good to be known for something, it gave you a place in the map. We all liked to be the ones who knew a lot about politics, or music, or who lived a different, interesting lifestyle than most.

But in your late 20's, most people are done with college and only try to keep the few friends they've made. The only place you go to socialize with people you didn't choose yourself is your job. And in both of these you just want to fit in rather than stand out. So the things that made you unique and special when you were trying to reassert individuality are now becoming a burden. You've started to idealize this literary lifestyle when you were younger, probably in high school and college, because it helped you find your way through the geography of our own consistent social alienation. But now this context is gone, you feel like the only people who is there to witness your erudition is yourself, and you have to come to places like /lit/ where this erudition is valued in order to be validated. After all, you've invested too much. You're not going to change now.
