He married his 12 year old cousin didn't he?
Pretty good writer though. I liked his story about "The Literary Life" of what ever his name was.

From what little I've read Poe's poetry is wretched. I have no interest in going any further with him.

Why do the smug shit eating europoors infest this board so badly? We need flags to be site wide so we can single out what country the shitposters are from.
Not a great poet, nor a great guy in general, but a great guy for discussing and making fun of really. I use a pic of him for my face on most the social media I use. It just seems like the things we like him for aren't the things he should be likes for. He may have been a poet or whatever, but he just seemed like more of just an interesting person altogether.

One of the hardest working writers of all time. Quite poor, won a few small writing competitions. Was the editor of magazines, known for his harsh literature reviews. An alcoholic. Never had any real money, could hardly afford blankets for his ill wife/cousin who was sure to die (and did die). I'm surprised /lit/ doesn't like him more.

Too many normies and unwashed peasants claim Poe as their favorite.
If it weren't for his having been claimed by the high school anthols, he would be properly remembered as the father of the police procedural. The crime mystery. It's the one indispensable prong of his legacy.
He kind of was the stephen king of his day, produced a ton of fucking garbage, but wrote a dozen or so really good things, so we consider him a great.
