He wasn't special. Many scifi writers do all the same drugs and have all the same influences and experiences but most just avoid making their book universe run around the drugs. He managed to do it and mostly not make it too cheap and shallow.

i wouldn't say he was either. he started as a competent writer then slowly lost his mind for our enjoyment. he's fun to read and that's all that matters.

Absolute genius. He predicted so many inventions in his books.

A Scanner Darkly is one of the most accurate books about drug addiction, and a great insight into 70s hard drug culture in California even though it's set in the future.

I like him in general but "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" sucks.

Both. Some of its commercial work done quickly for cash, some of it is art.
This is not an uncommon pattern of output for many much greater artists.
Check out Mozart doodling on autopilot, if you get one of those complete sets with hundreds of hours of complete rubbish hardly anyone records or listens to now.
Some even say you can chop Shakespeare's output up like this too.
