It really depends. If it's being done by animals, then painting really has the edge. In fact, thee have been several animal artists of record, in particular of the elephant and cat variety. No dogs as far as I can recall. Dogs are good with music creation, as we are always reminded this time of year, much moreso than are cats or elephants. I think there was a donkey artist too. Anyway, the interpretive possibilities of animal-created painting greatly exceeds that of their literary output. The commercial possibilities go without saying.

Sometimes. Visual art is great because it delivers everything at once instead of putting you in a one way track (like music or literature). You can get lost inside a picture for as long as you want and it'll always be there. On the flip side, being explicit and moving you are exactly what literature and music respectively beat it at. (And no, the combination of those three characteristics doesn't make film the better medium.)
