Is there a good, brief book on the Roman Empire? No more than around 500 pages. I just want the broad strokes.
Greek influence, fall of the republic, main events and people, Christianity, Germanic people arriving on the scene, collapse and the aftermath.
Sorry if this should be on /his/.

I am also interested.
I suspect it may be quite difficult to find a good, concise book about the entire history of the Roman Empire, however.

I would settle for a mediocre one if it hits all the important points desu. I just don't want a huge tome because I know I won't finish it. Right now my knowledge is based on podcasts and video games I played as a kid.
Great question - not one that I know of. Most written on Rome has a lot of depth/complexity. You might be best off with wikipedia, youtube videos or RTW, then looking at primary sources for events you're particularly interested in.

The History of Rome by Michael Grant seems to be a pretty well respected one volume history of the entirety of Rome from it's beginning to decline.
For what you're looking for it seems pretty much perfect. Writings about Rome are usually far more specific than a general history, because there are a number of periods within Roman history that span a huge length of time that would be a complete history of other empires.
Perhaps if you feel unsatisfied with detail after reading that book, you should look into books about more specific periods and individuals.

I bought a book by Polybius lately entitled: The Rise of the Roman Empire, seems like something you'd enjoy a lot.

Looks good, thanks pal. Yeah the plan is to get a quick gist of the overall story of the empire. Then I can go into whatever specifics I want, if I feel like it.

I looked into it and it seems too specific for me at the moment. If after reading a complete history I might dive into it if I want more information on the rise.

Why do so many people idolize the Roman Empire?
