Even the most American writer, Whitman, was largely unappreciated in his lifetime, except by Emerson who was essentially an Englishman. It was the Pre-Raphaelites who made Whitman famous. Poe was discovered by Baudelaire and co.

Most great American writers had to leave America to become appreciated.

Not a book rec, but your image is fairly dated. K-Mart, The Simpsons, and Peanuts aren't really large figures in our cultural consciousness anymore. Peanuts is getting pulled from the funny pages of a lot of newspaper syndicates, many people believe The Simpsons hasn't been funny in 5+ years, and K-Mart is a rapidly shrinking chain with a very poor reputation.
