Course in General Linguistics By Ferdinand de Saussure
get a computational linguistics text book, saussure is cool for "look at the canonical stuff i read" cred, but it' not going to teach anything particularly relevant, it's like want to study biology and starting with origin of species, no that's supplemental reading u might get assigned at an expensive school, but u need to focus on a general survey textbook first
