It was a 20-page writing sample from a novel I've written about a young priest who is arrested during the Second World War for praying over the bodies of what turn out to be German soldiers who have shed their uniform in an attempt to escape capture by the Allies. Due to one of his parents having moved to the US from Germany in their youth, he is transported back to the United States to await trial. Once there he witnesses the brutality carried out both by guards and inmates in the New York jail in which he is captive, and becomes sullen and withdrawn, Bartleby-like, and is eventually sent to psychiatric hospital where a host of young doctors are free to experiment on their patients, often in a cruel and sadistic manner. He meets a nun diagnosed with schizophrenia and thanks to her parents' wealth and influence both she and the priest, Thomas Winnsome, are granted freedom shortly before a particularly harsh medical trial is scheduled to take place. I won't give away the whole story but that is more or less the content of my submission. I didn't realize the actual teachers confirm your being accepted onto the course, I thought it was a prank at first.
