It depends on what you're trying to do with the poem - e.g. rhyme schemes can create a humorous tone, like with limericks. Taking a look at Shakespeare and poets of his era, we see that a whole lot of rhymes and puns are totally lost on us since pronunciations have changed over time.
Personally, rhyme isn't as important to me as what the poet does with word choice, meter, repetition, structure, etc.
