did mersault have some intellectual disability? his edgelord outlook on life was retarded in a practical sense. I understand he was existential or whatever, but how is that mindset conducive to everyday interactions/life?
>>
>>8715502
He wasn't expecting everyday interactions i think.
Meursault just didn't care
>>
>>8715502
I wouldn't say retarded, i mean, if somebody like him existed, it would take a lot of balls to not give a shit like he did.
>>
Yes that's exactly right, Camoo sat down at the ol ticky-typer and said "you know, I think I'm gonna write a story about a retarded guy."
>>
He's meant to represent someone anomic, which is a result of his "existential" mentalities
>>
Meursault is my fav character for sure because my fav thing in books is mundane events, and his book is full to the brim of it. Every chapter is like one of those novelty pet rocks, you open the book & POP you get a face fulla boredom and you fall back asleep. The mad mind, the crack genius, to do it! and then you think hmmm whats he gonna do next, this great mind, and you pick the book back up and BLAM you get a shot to the face and Hahahahahah you've been shot again by old Meursault, that card. "Woops, I was looking at the sun!" he says, half-conscious. Watch him as he takes his mom's corpse and displays her for you- left, right, center- "you think she died today? Or yesterday???" Pulls out a calendar. "Ah!" Hand to naughty mouth. And you're on your ass again getting sleepy as his head snaps on the guillotine and rolls off right.
>>
it wasn't. everyone is fucking retarded and misses the point that meursault changes his ways in the end. the book is the growht of a nihilist into an absurdist hero. the man you see at the start of the novel is someone who has recognized the absurdity of life but not been able to move forward from there. his imprisonment and death sentence forces meursault to face death and confront meaning in an absurd world
>>
>>8715502
Look up depression senpai.
>>
>>8715502
He simply wasn't a normie.
>>
He was a NEET and hated the sun

More than existencialism, Mersault is a vehicle for Camus to expose his particular brand of existencialism, Absurdism. I'd be interesting for you to read Camus' 'The Myth of Sysyphus', where Camus exposes his Ideas at length, particularly what he tought an aburdist novel should be like.

From my retarded point of view, what I could understand of the aburdist philosphy is this. We, men, have an inherent desire to search for meaning in life. Yet, such knowledge is impossible to acquire. We see the nature around us, we are baffled and amazed by it, yet we are somehow detached from it.

Like the myth of sisyphys we can't help but to eternally look for meaning even tough it's impossible; it's an eternal, pointless work, but we, men, should keep going at it, proud, with our heads up high.

In 'The Myth of Sisyphys', Camus applies the notion of the absurd to condemn suicide: to kill oneself is to give up on our eternal work/mission of search for meaning

autismic :D

Mersault is actually Camus' criticism of Existentialism up until he denies the priest before his death, it is only in his final denial of something that he affirms his own life.
>>
>>8715527
I mean...faulkner did that
>>

at the time of publishing autism wasn't a medicall recognised thing, he most likely saw some autistic people and went yeha those kool kiddies r existential wowee, and wrote a novel
>>
>>8715502
If superior intelligence is considered an intellectual disability then yeah, I guess he did.
>>
>>8717715
>he most likely saw some autistic people and went yeha those kool kiddies r existential wowee, and wrote a novel
You don't know anything about the novel do you?

This. Throughout the whole novel Mersault reacts to his world as little as possible it seems. His mother is dead, he barely has any emotion. He acts like a total nihilistic bore until he is about to die, when he finally realizes his own ignorance. And the final scene is him accepting the absurd, and then wanting to be executed for what he had done.
