Baldwin was the greatest writer on homosexuality since Wilde.
Tolstoy was a failed William Blake, and that's saying a lot. Should've stuck with short stories.

To answer OP: Yes he's just about on the same level. All three never got over the social-religious aspect and are all somewhat analogous. Tolstoy probed harder into God; Baldwin into race and sexuality; Morrison into Oprah(?).
