I suspect Thomas Ligotti is only well-regarded (by people who spend a lot of time on the internet) for two reasons:
he's too opaque for a beginner to confidently judge: a beginner wonders whether it's bullshit or he's just not *getting* it
Ligotti is too obscure for a prominent critic to read; if one did, everyone would know that it's bullshit, and that there isn't anything in it worth getting to be gotten
