Well, epos batalistyczno-rycerski and epos fantastyczno-przygodowy my ass; Pan Tadeusz is neither. Also, the elements of satire and bucolic that Mickiewicz implements successfully deprive this work of his of the noble title of an epic. It is a literary construct bordering on many genres, thus being a syncretic work and not an epic per se. Our national epic has yet to be written.

But the syntax is completely ruined in any translation.

I advocate prose translations of poetry, because you will never experience the beauty of the language in translation, so at least you can get clear images and metaphors.

Post WWII depression is a massive thing, yes. I guess that, with the current trend of mythologisation of events like the Warsaw Uprising, it is ineluctable for Poles to rest within the state of this emotional inertia; we need to go further and start anew, like the modernists.
