What does /lit/ think of Vonnegut?
Good introduction into more serious lit.

mostly extremely dull, trying to be quirky, incapable of writing a human being
Cat's Cradle was okay.

All of his characters are him, so no wonder. If you like morose, tired, world weary types he's great. About one step above genre fiction, not even he would agree he was a 'serious' literary author.
I read and understood Cat's Cradle in high school. It's good for that age group.
His novels all have the same conclusion so it really cheapens his work. Once you understand Vonnegut, I think you understand what actual literature can do.

Yep. I recommend Slaughterhouse Five because the rest of his novels are gimmicky.

Most science fiction and fantasy I've read is significantly better than Vonnegut, be it characters, prose, overall imagination, themes etc
He wasn't tremendously technically skilled by any means, lacking range, but what he lacked in technical skill he made up for with a certain charm. Most of his books are still in my bookcase and I pick them up from time to time.
