It was pretty raw. Especially when he started describing the picture books soldiers had, of mutilated body parts and necklaces made of ears. Not as good as "My Ware Gone By" though. War journalists are some of the gutsiest people I can think of. They wade into the filth of war and just tell it like it is.

My favorite book about vietnam
Its an excellent book, I say that as a non-American with no special investment or interest in Vietnam. Very Kerouac-esque in parts.
My favourite bits concern Sean Flynn motorbiking into firebases and blowing (already somewhat blown) minds because he looked just like his dad. WTF, its Captain Blood.
Reading it now it might be quite hard to disentangle from Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket because Herr both influenced and was involved in writing both.

Journalism, particularly this form of journalism, is a literary field.
Talking about 'non-fiction' as if something like Dispatches is indistinguishable from a Haynes Manual is a bit autistic
Furthermore, if you start erasing Truman Capote, Norman Mailer, Joan Didion, etc. you're not going to understand anything about late 20th century American literature because you'd have to read it without understanding the impact of Tom Wolfe's "new journalism".
i thought it was a good book, but i also thought if i ever met Paige i would punch his fucking face in. i wouldn't even wait for him to stop slow-dancing to the Doors in front of a mirror; it'd be like, boom, shot to the back of the head. yeah, talk about yourself in the third person some more whyncha, photographer?
