You only hate him because he's popular, right, /lit/?
/lit/ hates nobody
/lit/ hates everybody
/lit/ only hates itself
this man, in my country, he is NOTHING

I guess Murakami's really hot in a stern asian dad sort of way
people hate him here (imo) because his writing occupies the space between YA and 'grown up'/'serious' lit, so it's all kind of sweet and aimless with a bit of philosophical questioning mixed in. doesn't going into too much depth. in short he's not quite mcdonalds and not quite michelin starred.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that. he seems to know what he's doing.

How is he not YA?

appropriate michelin stars are a marketing ploy, as are categories like 'YA', 'literary fiction' etc. Debord had a bit on how the fancy wine industry depends on the existence of a class of wine experts to lead the consumers along. the same is true for most fetishized upscale commodities, including text content, ie. ''literature''

sure, I can get behind you on that. I was just using the ranking system to illustrate my point that Murakami isn't easily categorized and that confuses people whose nature is to label things as either YA or /lit/ as if they're mutually exclusive.
