Arnold Zweig (no relation) has written a six part cycle on WW1, I've read Education Before Verdun and it's good
It follows a group of soldiers like in Remarque's All Quiet etc., but you also get a view from the officers' ranks with one guy trying to avenge his brother who was killed because of internal aristocrat intrigue
Zweig was DDR-approved, but I didn't really feel that any party politics were being shoved in my face
