Is the sentence grammatically correct in the picture?
>>8690376
No, it should be
If you are a female whom drives
Standalone?
If you're a female, AND if you drive.
Or
If you're a female and drive.
AND must be capitalized, BECAUSE it's poor form to use a coordinating conjunction after a comma without capitalizing --- or at least italicizing. The comma is necessary for flow, one to three em bars is or are ( respectively ) okay, too.
>>8690376
It isn't a whole sentence
>>8690376
There's no such thing as grammatical correctness.
>>8690397
You will Crash... If you are a female and if you drive.
>>8690400
CRASH! Mom is driving
>>8690395
Prime example of someone on /lit/ acting qualified while not having a clue what he's talking about
>>8690404
Hearty keks, thank you anon.
>>8690376
For sale. A female.
Never driven.
if you're a woman driver
if you're a woman and you drive
if you're a woman who drives
>>8690404
kek
btw that's not a sentence
>>8690430
1) wrong
2) correct (why can't one use if?)
3) correct
>>8690430
Nice troll, buddy :P
>if you're a woman driver
If you are a woman driver.
( you didn't have a verb )
>if you're a woman and you drive
If you're
a) a woman
and
b)you drive.
(disambiguation)
>if you're a woman who drives
If you're a woman whom drives.
(woman is in the accusative case, so whom is correct instead of nominative "who")
>>8690452
if sets it up as a dependent clause.
>>8690459
not if you capitalize the second " IF. "
>>8690455
>(woman is in the accusative case, so whom is correct instead of nominative "who")
Hahaha WHAT THE FUCK /LIT/?
>>8690459
>if sets it up as a dependent clause
So?
>>8690376
You have to enclose if with commas because its a parenthetical
If you're a female and, if, you drive
If you're a female and only if, you drive.
>>8690455
Tell me the correct one.
>>8690493
you can't do verb phrase ellipsis with complementizers
>>8690499
The greentexted second one was correct but ambiguous. All non-greentexted examples are corrected, AND correct.
>>8690501
No? Then how do you explain these?
>I don't know whether
>He doesn't know if
>It's known that
>It's easy for
>>8690498
>So standalone dependent clauses aren't grammatically correct.
So would this be correct?:
If you are a female, and if you text "heyoo,"
>>8690376
The construction is not a complete sentence. It is, as >>8690459 points out, a dependent clause. Specifically, an 'if' clause is called a protasis, and it needs to modify an apodosis (a 'then' clause) to make a complete sentence.
Aside from that, 'you're' is correct. There should be a comma after 'and' though, and there would be one after 'drive' linking the clause to the apodosis. (If 'and' were omitted, the commas would be optional, but the latter one in particular would still be a good idea.)
>>8690529
only if you capitalize AND. There should be double spacing around " heyoo " too.
>>8690556
Now it isn't standalone though. . .
>>8690534
>The construction is not a complete sentence.
If it was to be like this >>8690556 then would it be right?
>>8690534
>protasis
>apodosis
whoa why are you talking about theater when this thread is about grammaticality?
>>8690563
We just can't get to the bottom of this OP, you're on your own.
Pic related is perfect.
>>8690622
What's your stance on "heh"
>>8690628
A semi-cynical connotation. "hehe" or "hehehehe" is absolute gay, though.
>>8690649
How would Hemingway laugh through text? What emojis are acceptable to you?
We are not amused.
>>8690663
*I am not amused.
:^)
>>8690658
Like a man. That's "hahaha."
>>8690622
Correct.
It's a sentence fragment.
>>8690376
Whether you are a female... (and whether you drive).
>>8690376
It's a grammatically correct piece of a sentence
>>8690404
Holy... I want more
Is this a correct sentence:
>Why /lit/ so easy to bait
>if female && drive(
is the correct
No it's
>If you're female and you know it, clap your hands
>If you're driving and you know it, clap your hands
>>8693119
>programming
>getting to interact with females
lol
>>8690376
It's a sentence fragment and it's grammatical when used to answer a question.
>>8690400
remove the second IF and it should be correct
>>8690669
>not knowing the royal we
The world has gone to shit
>>8690622
This is correct, right /lit/?
>>8693376
This.
>>8694202
Of fucking coarse,.
>>8690529
THERE'S NO FUCKING SUBJECT + VERB, FUCK
>>8694566
What do you mean?
>>8694594
Complete sentences require a subject and a verb, if the verb is intransitive. If the verb is trasitive, it's subject + verb + object.
OP's pic is a dependent clause, meaning, "If you're a female and if you drive..." uhhh, then fucking what?
>>8690376
yes, without the propositions
>>8690404
Holy..................
>>8694724
NEITHER ARE FUCKING SENTENCES
THEY'RE DEPENDENT CLAUSES
ARE YOU FUCKING WITH ME
YOU BETTER BE FUCKING WITH ME
>>8694928
Holy fucking shit, are you really that fucking retarded?
>>8694963
If that is a nice rebuttal, and if you are a cock sandwich...
>>8694966
"If you are a female" is not an independent clause. Independent means it stands on its own. "If" is a goddamn conjunction. It has to connect to something.
What is your reasoning behind which that is an independent clause?
I got over prescriptivism years ago, so why the fuck is this shit triggering me so hard?
>>8694970
It's independant because it stands by itself you fucking idiot.
Are you a fucking homo?
If you are >>8694970.
Notice how the sentence stands alone in that context despite the conjunction? That's called being an independent clause, you pseud. Now fuck off back to whatever board you came from and leave the real men to discuss literature and grammar.
>>8694979
IF
FUCKING """"IF""""
HOW THE FUCK DOES THAT STAND ON ITS OWN
JESUS CHRIST
>>8694994
>>8694970
Holy shit, I've been bamboozled.
This is payback for how I've been trolling /x/.
>mfw i deserve this
>>8690376
>>8695007
>if you drive
assuming it's referring to a Tesla model S it's not right,
>>8690376
This thread has devolved (of course it has) into trolling
It's long since been answered
Let it die
>>8690404
holy......
