If I want to be taken seriously as a writer, do I have to write a "coming-of-age" novel or a story of my artistic development?

maturation.

Yeah its basically like your resume, every great writer has to do it

being a human being is a lot about outgrowing yourself. a lot of good art is about that
I'm not saying you should or shouldn't do anything, but maturation goes beyond puberty.

Well, I'm a bit older than puberty. Joyce began writing A Portrait, just to use an example, at the age of 21. It wasn't published until he was 34.
I'm not necessarily talking about a teenage "coming-of-age" novel, even though I included it in my original post. More of the "artistic awakening" I guess.
I realize now it's a bit harder to explain this question than I thought.
