I'm actually reading that now. About halfway through at this point. If you can get over how wacky the premise of a Horse memoir is, it's not half bad.

I'd steer clear entirely. Trust me.

I'd recommend Nietzsche instead.
Preferably Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

National Velvet, Black Beauty

I've heard nothing but praise for Black Beauty, is it that good? Everyone that recommends it to me seems a bit off in the head, so I've never picked it up.
Fifty shades of Grey, its horse shit.

How do you mean off? Because I think there is something about Black Beauty that appeals to the odd, too-sensitive kids (mostly girls) who are likely weirdly obsessed with animals. It also leads perfectly into their future Victorian Lit obsession.

Well anon, they're all off in different ways. It's hard to put a finger on precisely what it is. But by off, I mean in the broadest sense that their mind is a dark and scary place. Your observations could have something to do with it?

idk it seems like people that were drawn to old books as young children are more likely to grow up to be off. Most of their peers don't read for pleasure, and those that do stick to stuff like Goosebumps. They probably spent a lot of time in their own head since a young age and their mind sort of stews

That makes a lot of sense, actually. Most of the people I've met who liked it were girls who grew up isolated on farms. I'll be sure tosteer clear.
