Portable Atheist is a pretty decent compilation of essays. God Delusion is alright. If you've already read the bible rationally, all the points he brings up are things you most likely have already thought about. I actually enjoyed Dawkins The Greatest Show on Earth. Not necessarily atheist lit but easily understandable science that reiterates the notion that there can't be a god. End of Faith and Letters to a Christian Nation are both pretty good. Haven't read anything for Dennett yet though.

this copy outright given to the Pope
Atheism can never generate anything truly creative because it's an intellectual vacuum, a void where faith should be. There will never be an atheist civilization. There will never be a great atheist novel, or film, or anything, really. All atheism has ever produced is a few vulgar polemics which seem pitiable next to the cornucopia of staggering works of genius produced by even the minor religions. That's all atheism will ever produce, all it can produce. Atheists are fundamentally alienated from the human experience in much the same way psychopaths or the profoundly mentally retarded are. A piece of their God-given souls is missing, the sacred fire within their spirit has gone out, and so they cannot, simply cannot create. To be an atheist is to be, in many ways, the antithesis of an artist.

wtf I believe in god now

i am not convinced this is an atheist text. it is simply a statement about the continual state of being and the underlying tao.

although i did notice some anti-mystical undertones in it. perhaps you could post something more

Can't atheists form belief systems and values outside of God? Why does there need to be a cosmic authority figure to fill our spiritual needs?
(serious questions, I don't actually know the answer)

Yes, you can have faith in people instead of God. You can try to achieve godliness without believing in God. And just because you don't believe in souls doesn't mean you don't have a soul to nourish. God doesn't have to be some force or will that exists outside ourselves.

>Can't atheists form belief systems and values outside of God?
Based on what instead? Nothing in this world is stable or lasting.
>Why does there need to be a cosmic authority figure to fill our spiritual needs?
Because the self is limited and temporary, as is the world. If you don't look beyond the cosmos for your ultimate authority, you'll find none worth having.

>Yes, you can have faith in people instead of God.
Hahahahahaha. Have you ever even met a person? I wouldn't trust most people to borrow my cellphone.
>You can try to achieve godliness without believing in God.
It's hard to achieve godliness even with believing in God, impossible without.
>And just because you don't believe in souls doesn't mean you don't have a soul to nourish. God doesn't have to be some force or will that exists outside ourselves.
Turning your own ego into God is a good way to develop a serious mental illness.

>Based on what instead? Nothing in this world is stable or lasting.
Immutability isnt a requirement fo a belief system.
>Because the self is limited and temporary, as is the world. If you don't look beyond the cosmos for your ultimate authority, you'll find none worth having.
See the point above + that last point is a pure value judgement
> I wouldn't trust most people to borrow my cellphone.
Its unfortunate that you live and participate in such conditions.
>It's hard to achieve godliness even with believing in God, impossible without.
Thats like saying its impossible to achieve the traits of Robbin Hood or King Aurther if you dont beleive he existed as a historical person
>Turning your own ego into God is a good way to develop a serious mental illness.
You cant turn your ego into something external to it.
