If he can afford to wait a couple years before the royalties checks start coming in, then he doesn't need the advance. And the publisher doesn't charge him interest on the advance until they get their end back.

Do your research. He only sells the 1$ rights to amateur filmmakers who want to make small-budget projects and aren't going to distribute them. The very few that have seen releases had to negociate undisclosed payment and royalties first.
