He was a commie to boot.
>>
You are boring
Ilike his poetry but i don´t find it particularly amazing

I have avoided his commie era.

first, I am skeptical of translated poetry in all cases. You can almost always translate meaning, you can sometimes manage to do it getting a rhyme, but you can never translate the euphonics of the poet, the sounds he/she chose.

his adult commie poetry is much better. I think he was a teenager when he wrote his most famous love poetry.
I hate communists, but the trick to enjoying his commie poetry is to just see Communism as a religion/dogmatic worldview he used for inspiration, like Catholic writers/painters, or westerners who discover the Upanishads.

Also, his communist poetry is entertaining because most of the time he is telling the story. it is almost epic poetry.
He mainly wrote about the Spanish conquest, the Inca Empire, and the Soviet Union.

This is a translated poem I found about Conquistador Balboa
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasco_N%C3%BA%C3%B1ez_de_Balboa

The Impaled Head
Balboa, you brought death and claw
to the corners of the gentle
midlands, and among hounds
of the chase, yours was your soul:
lion cub of bloody nether lip
who caught the fleeing slave,
sank Spanish fangs into pulsing
throats, and martyr’s flesh
hung from canine nails
while jewels fell into bags.
Cursed be man and dog,
the infamous howling in virginal
forest, the prowling footstep
of iron and bandit.
Cursed be the spiky crown
of wild blackberry bush
that leapt not like a hedgehog
to defend its ravaged cradle.
But among the bloodthirsty captains
there arose in the shadows
justice of daggers,
the harsh branch of envy.
And upon your return, astride
your path stood the name Pedrarias
like a hangman’s rope.
They judged you amid barking
of savage Indian dogs.
Now that you are dying, do you hear
the pure silence riven
by your goaded greyhounds?
Now that you are dying at hands
of the vicious captains
do you feel the golden breath
of the sweet ravaged realm?
When they cut off Balboa’s head
it was impaled upon a stick.
The lightning of his dead eyes
decomposed and descended the lance
like a splash of abomination
that disappeared into the earth.

This one is about the famous scene in which the Spanish give a Bible to the Inca Emperor and he drops it not understanding what it is.
If you dont like this kind of stuff, you should probably skip Neruda.

In Cajamarca the agony began.

The young Atahualpa, stamen of blue,
remarkable tree, listened to the wind
bring whispers of steel.
There was a confusion
of light and a tremor from the coast,
an incredible gallop
–hooves pounding and power–
of iron and iron through the weeds.
The Governors General arrived.
The Inca came out to the music
surrounded by his lords.

The visitors
from another planet, sweating and bearded,
went forward in tribute.
The chaplain
Valverde, traitorous heart, a rotting jackal,
holds out a strange object, a bit
of a basket, a fruit
perhaps from that planet
where the horses had come from.
Atahualpa takes it. He doesn’t know
what it is: it doesn’t shine, it makes no noise,
and he lets it fall, smiling.

“Death
vengeance, kill him, I absolve you all!”
shouts the jackal with the murderous cross.
The thunder gives aid to the bandits.
Our blood is spilled from the cradle.
In the hour of agony the princes
surround the Inca like a chorus.

Ten thousand Peruvians fall
beneath crosses and swords, the blood
soaks the robes of Atahualpa.
Pizarro, the swine from Extremadura
has the delicate arms of the Inca
cinched behind him. Night has descended
on Peru like a black ember.

I love how metaphorical his language is. To me this is a great gift and actually not that common among poets.

perhaps, but it find it hard to compare it to Canto General simply because Canto General is gigantic.
