Why?

I just can't understand how someone can make a race and nuclear war so incredibly boring.
Ethan Frome

Oh, and the worst book I've ever read is Billy Bud. I feel that I gained nothing from it and people I trust about books told me that I would.
Blood Meridian, Naked Lunch, and probably...most things Victorian.

What is the problem with Blood Meridian? I've been wanting to read it for a while.
Also, Turner diaries could be so much better.

I got 1/3 in and the prose made me angry. I don't find the run on sentences to be literary magic.
This book is awful but really funny in the same way as The Room. Don Spears is an idiot and has a huge ego yet he gives his thoughts on a number of topics he doesn't have the authority to speak on. He is a playboy gone poet. It is also the only book you will find with every page being full of the word "goodpussy" (always one word).
I've never wanted to punch a protagonist so much as this Lochan guy. I couldn't even finish it. The book was making me too goddamn angry at those characters.
>>8641546
>complaining about Victorian literature
I bet you regularly have sex and enjoy Don DeLillo
>>8642167
Most of the best writers since then have been greatly influenced by it directly or indirectly
Out by Kirino Natsuo. Absolute dogshit.

I hate it, but I recognise its value and what it did for English literature.
Yeah, sure, get the dual-language one. I'm personally not familiar with German Romantic literature, so you'll have one-up on me, for certain.
You should also get the Norton Anthologies. Everyone should get some solid anthologies and collections. English, American, World, Poetry from Norton are the enduring standard. Norton are bringing out a new edition of the American in November, so you may want to grab that. It's always great and worthwhile to get exposed and equipped with the lay of the land. Even if you end up hating it, you'll at least know of it and know a little something of why they do what they do, and why you do or do not like something, and they will stick with you for life as miniature, valuable libraries.

Aww that's nice :)
