I'm not even being a dick or trolling you, it's good that you like the Greeks as much as you do, but if you like the Greeks that much you really ought to learn some Greek. It is not anywhere near as hard as most would say, easier than Latin, comparable to German. Reading the Greeks in Greek is as much of a revelation as putting on glasses for the first time for a myopic. They simply do not translate, any more than classical Chinese translates.

Fair enough. Would definitely recommend finishing him, as the first few books are some of the least exciting (but still "curious"). The books about the war with Hannibal are some of the most intense Roman history I've found.

If you're up for it, check out Tacitus at some point as well. He's not particularly exciting (mostly due to subject matter) but is insightful and significant as a historian. The Annals are long and wearisome; the Histories, written earlier, are shorter and more exciting and will still give you an idea of his work.

But all in all, solid selection there; don't often see Plutarch's Moralia or the Homeric Hymns. Have you read most/all of those? Is this a pet project or for school?

Yeah, I enjoyed the founding myths but got bogged down in the history of the early republic which is why I didn't immediately continue with him. I really enjoyed Polybius' Histories and want to read more about the Punic Wars.

As much as I'd like to study literature in an academic setting, it's just a hobby for me. It was only within the last half year or so that I've really dived in though, before that I read a few unsubstantial books a year. Now I’m working my way through a few lists taken from university courses and general western canon reading. Looking forward to reading some more modern stuff, but also enjoying what I’m reading now.

A lot, comparatively. Alphabetization isn't that hard, I used to do it that way. Now I go by nation the author was born in and author's birth year, so it's geographic then chronological within that.

It's outlined topically rather than chronologically. To that extent he does provide a chronological play-by-play in an appendix at the back which is about 50 pages, the rest of the book is devoted to an analysis of the economy, political structure, religious structure, etc of the empire. I've only read the chronology and some of the first chapters.

If you're interested in the topic to the degree that you really want to know how the empire worked, it's the perfect book.

Pics related, somewhat dated, taken sometime during summer, unsorted shelf of recent acquisitions and newer shelf of journals not pictured.
I'm not saying the system's perfect or that I have been completely strict and/or thorough with my system, but to me the best overview is provided by separating languages and then publishers. Any alphabetic or thematic distinction has ended up looking retarded and confusing the big picture because books align very poorly when mixing publishers.
I'm away my camera was too shitty and my hands too shaky for you to pick up a lot of the titles, but I hope you'll survive.

I can honestly barely tell you're going by publisher, since you don't have huge color blocks going on (was expecting something like pic).

It looks pretty nice, anon. I don't think I'll ever change my country-of-origin->author's-birth-year method though. It's just too satisfying to casually look over the shelves and see a country's literary development.

I think I get what you mean, but isn't that easily solved by pulling all your books to the front of the shelves instead of having them pushed against the back? That's what I do, and no matter how long the book is, it's still even against the one next to it.

I'm that very anon and there's really no reason not to use my system. Already now the titles are starting to align neatly, there's also an entire shelf of books with both several Reclams, Suhrkamps, and Penguins that need to be added, and you might as well go by publisher from the start because your library will continue to grow. You also avoid problems with alphabetisation like choosing a head word, and thematic distinctions don't really make sense, especially for a small library.

I organize mine chronologically, with history books grouped with the era they discuss. By year I go from non-fiction to fiction and I group authors together from their earliest book to last.

Very autistic, but I like looking at literature historically so it helps to have a nice timeline.

The only issue is that I did most of my collecting before I seriously got interested in ancient history, so it's very heavily skewed towards post-19th century lit.
